Carol Dejager outside her new apartment
On December 2, 2024, Carol Dejager moved into her own apartment with the help of MV Advancement’s Supported Living Program (SLP) staff. Prior to her move, she lived in a group home for more than 10 years. MV Advancements now supports more people living independently through SLP than those residing in our five group homes in McMinnville.
“I think that’s what we need,” Carol said. “It’s what people really need—get them where they should be instead of just in a group home.”
When Carol first moved into a group home, it was a daunting experience. She knew one person who lived there, but the other three residents were complete strangers. Adjusting to life with new roommates took time.
“I didn’t know what to think or do,” Carol said. “It just took a while to get to know everybody. When you first don’t know somebody, it can be scary. We went to Seaside together, and that helped me get acquainted with everybody.”
As the years went on, Carol adapted to her living situation and found happiness. She worked for 12 years at McDonald’s and she currently works in the clothing department at Walmart. She frequently went on outings with her roommates on the weekends and developed strong relationships.
Carol became close friends with another resident who moved into the group home several years after she did. She also formed strong bonds with the MVA employees. However, Carol always knew she was capable of growth and was looking for the next step in her life.
That next step came when MV Advancements shared with her that there was an available unit at Baker Street Apartments, a low-income housing complex in McMinnville.
“They said there was an apartment available and asked if I was interested in moving, and at first, I said no,” Carol said. “Then, the more I thought about it, I was like, maybe it’s time to get my own place and have my own independence.”
It was time. Carol applied for the apartment and met with the SLP team to assess her support needs and determine how they could help her live independently. Together, they decided they could assist her with the transition, and support her with activities of daily living as well as her medical needs.
After a short but anxious wait, Carol’s application was approved, and the move was underway. She furnished the apartment herself with help from the SLP team, transforming it into a home.
Now, after two months of living on her own, Carol has just adopted a cat named Star to share her space and provide companionship.
MV Advancements is proud to support Carol on her journey to independence and to celebrate the milestone of supporting more individuals in independent living than in group homes, which has been a goal for the organization. We remain committed to empowering people to live their best lives, on their own terms. Congratulations Carol on your new place and your new cat!
