Aloha Adventures: Kristy and Cindy’s Cruise to Paradise

A Collage of Kristy and Cindy’s Vacation

What started as a simple idea became the adventure of a lifetime for Kristy and Cindy. These two lifelong friends have both been supported by MVA for over 30 years and have lived together for most of that time. They decided to celebrate their friendship in the most memorable way—on a cruise to Hawaii!

It all began when Kristy got the idea of attending a Luau. At first, staff members considered hosting an MVA Luau in the backyard, but then they thought, why not go to Hawaii for an authentic experience? And that’s exactly what they did!

The journey began early Saturday, November 16th when Grace and Tammy, MVA house managers, arrived at work at 3 AM to help Kristy and Cindy get ready. Then it was off to PDX where they flew to Honolulu, ready to set sail.

Once aboard the ship, Kristy and Cindy familiarized themselves with their surroundings, completed safety checks, and rested after a long day of travel. They enjoyed a buffet dinner that night, treating themselves to a true vacation where you don’t count calories.

The next day, the cruise ship docked in Maui and the group disembarked to explore the town, walking over five miles! The group loved visiting Maui and all the tourist attractions.

The next two days were all about relaxing by the pool on the ship, listening to live music, and soaking up the sunshine. Kristy floated in the pool non-stop and while Cindy wasn’t interested in swimming, she laughed and danced to the live band shows and caught plenty of rays. The ladies also attended a magic show one evening and a comedy show the next, both of which they absolutely loved.

The highlight of the trip was the Luau, held on a beautiful fruit plantation on day five of the adventure. The day started with a farm tour. They boarded a train that looped around the property showing them all the ins and outs of the plantation. They learned the farm’s produce is not sold, but rather donated to schools and families in need.

The Luau itself was unforgettable, featuring traditional Kalua Pork. The pork is wrapped in banana leaves then buried underground beneath hot coals. It was a true Hawaiian feast! Cindy and Kristy enjoyed their meal while watching authentic Hawaiian dances, songs, and games performed by locals.

“Watching them smile and do the things they can’t normally do at home was the highlight for me,” Tammy said. “Watching them dance and laugh and be so happy was unforgettable.”

On their last day, Kristy and Cindy relaxed, packed up, and prepared to head home, reflecting on an incredible trip filled with laughter, dancing, and new experiences.

When asked about what’s next, Kristy’s eyes lit up as she said, “I want to go to Paris!” With their adventurous spirits, we can’t wait to see what’s next in store for Kristy and Cindy!
